A series of three jaw pieces in sterling silver with real coyote teeth, molded from my mouth.

My mouth is full of teeth that aren’t mine. They are uncomfortable, they hang from my mouth, they disrupt my chewing. I chose to represent my mouth as something malleable, silver, and white as bone while the coyote teeth are real since to me they often feel very real even if they are were they don’t belong or make sense anatomically. Phantom sensations for me are not often the same, and don’t map to my body in logical ways.

I have worn these. More photos to come!

Beaver Brook School

My friends Armin, George and I are hosting the first Beaver Brook School on Aug 25th through Sep 2nd, an intensive 8-day course to learn how to design and construct a building.

Ten applicants will be invited to stay in bunkhouse, spend long days in workshops and at the job site, and walk away with construction know-how. You will also have built a building.

If I wasn’t graduating, I would totally apply to this. I hope this happens again/next year!

I am said FTM partner and am a canine therian. While I do not feel species dysphoria, I have been having a long relationship with my doctors about my canine-ness and while my doctors have been wonderful, loving, and critical, they certainly don’t have time or money to just independently study whatever they so please. I feel lucky that I have doctors trained and knowledgeable about trans matters! Education takes lots of time and money, but it is all anyone can do but speculate and do independent layperson research until more work can be done. For now, I’m sending and spending resources on what community efforts exist to study being therian.

I also have made it my artistic duty to try to express my own experiences through body art and sculpture and slowly attempt to investigate making prosthetics that challenge our bodies. I seek academic guidance from my professors and when I have the money/place in my life for grad school, I will likely be doing the same thing. I use the language of “species dysphoria” and related body dysmorphia terms literally all the time, daily, and it is very useful to explain why someone would want to be able to run digitigrade or have the ability to more comfortably run on all fours, etc. This isn’t appropriative, it is being clear. While I don’t think that serious mental health problems define being therian or otherkin (I don’t see why, without stats, to say we are different from the rest of the world population) but unless someone is deliberately trying to use trans-culture language and the useage is wrong (as in, we are not describing similar feelings) then have at.

Coyote fur scraps.

I’ve been pretty inspired by the taxidermy process of re-hydrating stretching, and gluing hide in a shape. I form it on human foam heads and use layers to glue it in place. This one is very comfortable and tight, and the construction prevents me from opening my mouth. The fur comes inside and out, twisting, there are partially developed ears and a full pair, and the nose is missing on the coyote on one hide as it blends into my own nose. I think a lot about my own phantom sensations as I make these masks.
